Decimals are exact. Millimetres are rounded to 0.001 mm (1″ = 25.4 mm exactly).

02

Decimal to fraction

Step 1

Times 16

Multiply the decimal part by 16. For 0.37″: 0.37 × 16 = 5.92.

Step 2

Round it

Round to a whole number of sixteenths: 5.92 ≈ 6/16. Use 32 or 64 instead of 16 for finer work.

Step 3

Reduce

Halve the top and bottom while both are even: 6/16 = 3/8″. For millimetres, divide by 25.4 first.

Plans often give lengths in decimal feet, like 12.35 ft. Keep the 12 feet, then multiply the decimal part by 12: 0.35 × 12 = 4.2″. The table rounds that to the nearest mark you can measure, 4 3/16″, so the length is 12′ 4 3/16″.
